The business has come a long way from the 1980s market stall it once was. After opening its first store in Preston in 1985, the business soon grew. So much so that by 1995, 50 stores had been established, along with a head office, warehouse, and logistics operation in Skelmersdale. Now, with over 200 stores across UK and Ireland, it is one of the UKs top value retail businesses.
The business is now set for the next level of its journey, thanks to its new, purpose-built head office just outside Liverpool. Alongside this, new high street stores have been established in prestigious locations like Oxford Street, while the brand has also expanded overseas.
Matalan are ambitious about becoming the UKs number one value retailer, both in-store and online. They hope to achieve this through their website, click and collect service and home delivery networks, as well as the technology that keeps them going.
The business puts its success down to the fact that it has always kept up to date with consumer trends.
Something which is very important to Matalan is its sense of ethics, ability to support communities and charities, such as Alder Hay and the NSPCC, while also doing much work locally and globally to give something back.
